The Kitchen Renovation Process

| Wedgewood Cabinetry |

While taking on a renovation project can be fun and rewarding, it can also be overwhelming, especially when you don’t know where to start. Our hope is that the information below will guide you and take some of the mystery and stress out of the process.

Here is the ideal sequence of a kitchen remodel:

  1. HIRE A REPUTABLE CONTRACTOR

Do your homework, ask around and get bids from multiple contractors. Keep in mind, the pricing you get may change once your design is complete. Therefore, you may want to have a completed design with drawings to give a contractor for a more accurate price.

  2. GET A FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING DESIGN FROM A DESIGN PROFESSIONAL.

This could be from an interior designer, an architect, or a kitchen and bath designer.

  3. SELECT YOUR APPLIANCES AND PLUMBING FIXTURES.

Ideally, this should be done before the design is developed. However, please note that your designer may recommend a particular appliance that may work best for your kitchen design so be flexible about making changes.

  4. SELECT YOUR CABINET DOOR STYLE AND COUNTERTOPS MATERIAL.

While you are in the design phase is the time to select your cabinet door style, color and finish as well as the countertops material as these items must coordinate with each other. You will also want to know how much each will cost.

  5. ORDER YOUR CABINETS.

The cabinetry will be the part of the kitchen that will take the longest to manufacture, especially if you are purchasing custom cabinets.

  6. SCHEDULE THE START DATE WITH YOUR CONTRACTOR.

Once you have ordered your cabinets, the next step is to set a start date with your contractor. You must give him/her the anticipated date that your cabinets are due to arrive and he/she will work backwards from tere. Generally, your contractor will start demolition about two to three weeks before the arrival of your cabinets.

  7. EMPTY OUT YOUR EXISTING CABINETS AND REMOVE ALL FURNITURE AND PERSONAL ITEMS FROM THE AREAS TO BE RENOVATED.

This should be done the week before your scheduled start date.

  8. BRACE YOURSELF

Living without running water in your kitchen isn’t easy. People tend to get cranky about this toward the end of a project, and understandably so.

  9. ENJOY!

Enjoy the hard work you put into your kitchen remodel and take the time to appreciate the features and functionality you helped design.
